The Balinese people celebrate the cow – sapi as a holy creature, whilst other cultures in their immediate environment consume its meat. Eva Menz found Mr Made a local artisan who had discovered bone carving as therapy. Together they created an ethereal, floating piece with the aim to provoke a gently, calming and peaceful emotion ordinarily unexpected with the traditional association with the remains of a living creature.
Left almost in its plain form, beautifully polished, suspended like jewels, this is a celebration of the beauty of a feared, discarded and often-tainted material.
Eva Menz spent two months in Bali teaching, working and exploring, her collaborator was her long-time friend and talented art director Lena Mahr.
